What are Facet Modes?

Facet Modes are named app collections inside your Mac app launcher. Each mode shows only the apps you assign to it, so a work launcher can stay separate from design tools, developer utilities, or entertainment apps. Switch from Facet itself, the menu bar, or Settings. The protected All Apps collection always remains available.
Use cases

Organize Mac apps around the way you work.

Design

Keep creative tools in view.

Build a focused visual launcher for the apps you reach for while designing, editing, or presenting.

Photoshop · Figma · Sketch · Final Cut Pro

Development

Make a clean developer launcher.

Separate editors, terminals, API tools, and local utilities from the rest of your Mac.

Xcode · Visual Studio Code · Terminal · Postman

Office

See only the tools for the day.

Keep communication, planning, documents, and meeting apps together without moving anything in Finder.

Mail · Calendar · Slack · Notion

Entertainment

Leave work out of leisure time.

Give music, video, games, and social apps their own visual collection for off-hours.

Music · TV · Steam · Discord

Fast switching

Change modes where it makes sense.

01 · Launcher

Switch inside Facet.

Use the mode control beside search without leaving the launcher.

02 · Menu bar

Switch before you open it.

Choose a mode from Facet's menu-bar menu, then open the right collection.

03 · Settings

Build and refine modes.

Create, rename, duplicate, recolor, and edit each mode's app membership.

Flexible, not fragile

One app can belong to every part of your life.

Reuse apps across modes

Safari can appear in Office, Design, and Development. Adding it to another mode does not duplicate the app bundle or change its Finder location.

All Apps stays protected

The permanent All Apps collection always shows the complete scanned app library. It cannot be deleted, and mode membership never removes an installed app.

Give each mode its own look

Store mode-specific launcher preferences such as fullscreen or compact presentation, icon size, layout, scrolling, and wallpaper behavior.

Keep the same launcher habits

Search, launch, folders, dragging, and keyboard navigation work as before. Modes change the collection, not the core Facet interaction.

Clear boundaries

Facet Modes are collections, not virtual desktops.

Switching a Facet Mode does not launch, quit, hide, move, or rearrange running apps.

Privacy and editions

Your modes stay on your Mac.

Local-first organization

Facet stores mode names, app membership, order, and appearance preferences locally on the Mac. The product does not include advertising telemetry. These product facts are documented in the Facet 1.0.23 release notes and the public Facet source repository.

Transparent Pro boundary

Creating and switching custom modes requires Facet Pro. Facet Free retains All Apps plus the fullscreen grid, search, folders, ordering, Launchpad import, and global shortcut. Compare editions.

FAQ

Common questions about Mac app launcher modes.

What are Facet Modes?

Facet Modes are named app collections inside the Facet Mac app launcher. Each mode shows only the apps you assign to it, while the protected All Apps collection remains available.

Do Facet Modes open or close a group of apps?

No. Switching a mode changes which apps appear inside Facet. It does not launch, quit, hide, move, or rearrange running apps and windows.

Are Facet Modes included in Facet Free?

No. Custom modes require Facet Pro and are available during the optional 14-day Pro trial. Facet Free continues to include All Apps, fullscreen browsing, search, folders, ordering, Launchpad import, and a global shortcut.

Can one app appear in more than one mode?

Yes. An installed app can appear in any number of modes without being copied or moved on disk.

Can I create my own modes?

Yes. Create a mode with your own name, SF Symbol icon, color, app collection, and mode-specific launcher settings. Default modes can also be edited or duplicated.

How do I switch Facet Modes?

Switch from the mode control in the launcher, Facet's macOS menu-bar menu, or the Modes section in Settings.
